Opening sentence
The house at number 11 Ruby Road has stood on the corner for more than one hundred and fifty years...
Best suited for kids aged 9-12 (more towards the older end), '11 Ruby Road' is a great historically-set story which could be used as a way to introduce students to a range of new concepts such as the suffragette movement.
Following the story of Dorothy, a young girl who moves into a new city neighbourhood, which is very different from her rural background, and we learn about life in the early 1900s. Dorothy is a very intelligent child who loves writing, wanting to pursue this as a career when she grows. In the meantime, Dorothy befriends George and witnesses racism through his experiences.
While talking about quite heavy topics, '11 Ruby Road' maintains its story-telling flow, perfect for those children who love reading historical fiction and learning about historical events. Dorothy is a delightful character; showing young children how to be themselves, pursue their goals and to stand up for what they believe in.
