Opening sentence
Are you fascinated by water?
Take me to the beach! As I flicked through the pages I felt an immediate compulsion to get to the beach and start discovering through the activities. This book is so much more than a simple activity book, it is divided into sections: Worlds, Wildlife, Nature's Gifts, Wai and Connection. Even if you don't live close to the beach there are other opportunities to connect with wai/water in your local surrounds.
The design of the book is a mix of photographs and worksheet style pages nestled amongst Pippa Keel's illustrations. The illustrations have a whimsical feel, and they create a sense of fun and interest. There are 175 pages so there is lots of see and digest, which makes this a book that will be picked up time and time again.
The use of te reo and tikanga is beautifully integrated and highlighted throughout, such as information about the right Harakeke leaves to cut. There is a kupu section at the back to help understand the te reo words used. There is also an extensive glossary and a section on 'websites and extra resources' which can lead to further research for keen young naturists.
The appeal of this book is wide, although the title refers to the beach many of the activities could be completed at home, or the classroom, such as the forced perspective, learning about maramataka and the water cycle. A great companion book for nature loving families or those who want their rangatahi to develop an inquiring mind and appreciate the waterways of Aotearoa.
My younger self would have loved this book, and I'll be adding this to my list of books to give as gifts!
