Opening sentence
Ināianei, kua mauheretia a Te Kōkōrangi e tāna hoariri ko Ruatapu. Nā tēnei kei te mate haere ngā kūmara. Me whai atu a Ariā i ngā tapuwae o Tāwhaki, me piki ia ki ngā rangi, ki a Whānui kia tono āwhina.
He rawe ki te kite i tētahi pukapuka-wāhanga me ngā pikitia whakaari me te whakanui i ngā pūrākau a kui mā, a koro mā. He pukapuku pai kia pānuitia e ngā whānau reo Māori, e ngā kura reo Māori anō hoki.
Witi Ihimaera has released a sequel to the book Te Kōkōrangi, A Ariā me te Atua o te Kūmara is the name of his newest book. Now Te Kōkōrangi has been captured by his enemy Ruatapu. Because of this the kumara crops are dying. Ariā will need to follow in the footsteps of Tāwhaki and ascend to the heavens, to the star Whānui to ask for help.
This book has ten chapters and is 62 pages long. This book will be good for tamariki who would like to challenge themselves to read chapter books. The illustrations by Isobel Joy Te Aho-White will be a great help to children new to reading chapter books. And the illustrations are beautiful!
There are not many books like this. It is great to see a chapter book with illustrations and celebrating pūrākau passed down through the generations. This book will be good for children aged nine to twelve. This is a great book for whānau reo Māori and classrooms immersed in te reo Māori.
