Opening sentence
All his life, young lord Teneriffe Maylon has heard whispers.
The story focuses on four strong women, Matilde, Sayer, Aesa, and Fen. Each comes from different backgrounds and are all connected through magic. Their magic has made them a target and they have to decide to either fight or accept what is happening to them. This novel touches on some big issues happening in the world today, such as women fighting against the patriarchy system.
Some stand out features used throughout this novel include:
The cover is well designed, eye-catching and entices readers to pick it up. The maps in the beginning of the novel are true to a fantasy style novel and are intricate and beautifully designed. At the end of each chapter, there are epigraphs of poetry, songs, journals and other extracts which help to build a more well rounded story. These help create a backstory of what happened to the Fyrebirds in the past and create a deeper understanding of the culture and events happening within the novel.
I haven’t read a fantasy novel in a while, and after reading this I am encouraged to read more. I like that it was easy to read, it didn’t heavily focus on the romance element (Although, I do admire the inclusion of a queer romance) and how it was about women fighting for what they believe in. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series.
