Opening sentence
Dusk creeps. Birds peep. Ruru opens his eyes, stretches his wings, and calls... More-Pork! More-Pork!
Ruru (Morepork), is our only surviving species of native owl. The author tells Ruru's story over one night, integrated with interesting facts about the bird, whilst clearly comparing what Ruru does at night to that of a child trying to sleep.
Very similar to Katie Furze's previous book, Tuatara: A Living Treasure, Ruru is a fantastic resource being both entertaining and informative. Background and facts at the end of the text are also valuable. Ned Barraud uses colour and contrast beautifully, bringing the story to life. The cover is stunning.
Another important book to remind children of our unique and often endangered wildlife. Furze and Barraud's newest collaboration is certainly as good as the first.
