Opening sentence
The first time I saw the Other Shadow was the day Dad died.
Tom is ten when his dad dies and his life starts to fall apart. As his Mum struggles with grief and her own mental health issues, Tom has only the occasional company of the mysterious Other Shadow to support him as he tries to look after his sister, his Mum and to keep what remains of his family together. Is the shadow giving him the right advice or does HE know better? As things fall apart and Tom and Tilly are sent off to a foster home, where should his trust lie? Where should his loyalties lie?
Tania Ingram draws upon her years of experience as a clinical psychologist to write this thrilling and engaging book about a boy struggling with complex issues that we wish children should never have to deal with, but far too often they do. It carefully explains bipolar disorder and mental health issues in a way that will help people understand and accept them, while also understanding that some people will be judgemental and ignorant about them.
The Other Shadow is a stand-alone novel which would appeal to all genders. As the main character is between the ages of 10 and 13, the book would most likely appeal to people in this age group, although it would still appeal to older readers because of the serious content. The reading level is not difficult, however if it was read by younger readers, I would recommend a lot of adult emotional support. The book could be a very valuable tool for a younger person going through some traumatic issues and needing support. I would not recommend it being read to an entire class of year 3s or 4s because of the issues raised. It deals with cancer, death and mental health issues which may all need to be handled carefully.
