Opening sentence
How can you sort what’s real from what’s not? It isn’t always obvious.
This is an entertaining book full of weird creatures, both real and imagined. It is the reader’s job to decide what actually exists and what is made up, which is not an easy task as some of the “real” subjects are just as unbelievable as the “unreal”.
There is a guide at the front of the book suggesting ways to differentiate between the two which can also be applied to any information that we are being given through any media. Every few pages there is a reminder of what to look out for: unconscious bias, proof vs evidence, well-known hoaxes, and cryptids which are “an animal that some people believe is real but whose existence isn’t backed up by strong evidence.”
The overall impression of this book is one of vibrant colour and fascinating facts.
The size of the book allows for pictures on a large scale showing nature at its most remarkable, with small blocks of explanatory text throughout.
It is a fascinating book and one that can be dipped in and out of at want.
I would recommend this to capable readers of 9 years and up.
