His first book, Fernleaf Cairo, was published by HarperCollins in 2009, and it is an historical account of New Zealand soldiers in wartime Egypt. The book is co-authored by historian Megan Hutching. Fernleaf Cairo was reviewed in the Gisborne Herald, ‘Between 1939 and 1946, about 76,000 Kiwis of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force found themselves camping just south of Cairo…Fernleaf Cairo offers an interesting insight into how the Kiwis handled the sometimes overwhelming culture and weather that confronted them…Of the 76,000 Kiwis who passed through the camp, 29,000 were declared missing, wounded, or dead, which reinforces the importance of this book as a record of this part of New Zealand history.’
David Scoullar wrote in the Wanganui Chronicle, ‘This book, full of colour, anecdotes and memories is a welcome addition to the social history of New Zealanders in WWII.’
Alex Hedley’s Easy Company, 506th PIR, In Photographs was published in 2009 by Genesis.
His writing has also appeared in the NZ Listener.
