Nick Hyde
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hyde, Nick (1951 - ) is a novelist whose books reflect the mix of exotic destinations to which his varied career has taken him.
Born in Wellington and educated at Victoria University, Hyde has worked in a range of jobs from postman to cold cast bronze maker. His travels have included time living in Florence, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Sydney, London and the Greek Islands. With such a peripatetic existence it is little surprise then that Hyde's writing appears in an anthology of travel writing, Good Tourist and Laughing Cadaver (1993).
His first novel, Earthly Delights (1989) is '[a] rich and sensual evocation of life in Amsterdam and in a small New Zealand rural community,' wrote Michael King. In the UK, the Sunday Times writes that the novel '[s]hows a strong descriptive talent and the characters are boldly drawn.' The NZ Listener says Earthly Delights 'brims with energy... constantly quickened by Hyde's enthusiasm and by his frequently felicitous images.'
Camilla Vanilla (2000) is set on the sun-hazed beach of an Aegean island. 'The definitive novel for anyone who has ever watched the world through half-closed eyes and seen endless horizons in the golden haze of sand and summer sun,' suggests the cover blurb.
In the New Zealand Herald David Hill writes: 'There are good set pieces, brisk present tense, agile sentences and much witty talk... enviable one-line encapsulations dart past...'.
Nick Hyde's short stories have been broadcast on National Radio and appeared in New Zealand Erotica (1994) and in journals including Landfall, Southerly, Takahe, and Scotland's West Coast Magazine.
