Victoria McHalick is a poet and fiction writer, with degrees in Law and English from Victoria University. She also attended Bill Manhire’s creative writing class in 1986. Her first published work was the title story in Emily Perkins’ anthology The Picnic Virgin (1999). McHalick’s collection of short stories, The Honey Suckers, was published in 2001, and her novel, The Taming appeared in 2003. Penelope Bieder described it as ‘a clever, seductive novel about the end of innocence…an assured, fearless novel’.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

McHalick, Victoria (1965- ) is a poet and fiction writer.

McHalick was born in England. The oldest of four daughters to New Zealand parents, McHalick has lived in New Zealand since 1967.

She completed a Law Degree and a BA (English) at Victoria University of Wellington and in 1986 she attended Bill Manhire’s creative writing class where she wrote poetry.

From 1989 –1993 McHalick lived and worked in England, Scotland and France before returning to settle in New Zealand. Her first published work was the title story in Emily Perkins’ anthology The Picnic Virgin (1999). She has since published a collection of short stories, The Honey Suckers (2001) and a novel, The Taming (2003).

Writing in the NZ Herald Penelope Bieder calls The Taming ‘a clever, seductive novel about the end of innocence…an assured, fearless novel’. In The Dominion Post, Bronwyn Bannister writes that ‘McHalick is a skilful writer and her debut novel is finely detailed and deceptively simple.’

Victoria McHalick lives in Wellington.
