Antony Millen
Millen, Antony (1971 - ) is a novelist and short story writer. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and studied at St Francis Xavier University. Millen moved to New Zealand in 1997 and currently works as the head of the English department at Taumarunui High School.
Millen’s debut novel, Redeeming Brother Murrihy, was published in 2013. It was described by Christodoulos Moisa in The River City Press as “a highly successful first novel… a quest for self-discovery and redemption written by someone who has a deep understanding of what stirs the spirit.”
In 2014, Millen’s short story Fishing the Pungapunga was the winner of the 2014 Heartland Short Story Competition. Another short story, The Boy at Ohinetonga won Highly Commended at the 2014 NZSA Central Districts Short Story Competition. Millen also released his second novel, Te Kauhanga: A Tale of Space(s). Author Tui Allen wrote, “How anyone could dream up such characters escapes me. Between them they allow their creator, the author, to weave a story so original, I defy anyone to find one remotely like it.”
Millen’s first book for young adult readers, The Chain, was published in 2015. In the same year, his short story Aukati came third in the 2015 NZSA Central Districts Short Story Competition. Aukati was later published in Landfall.
In 2016, Millen came second in the Surrey Hotel Steve Braunias Memorial Writers Residency in Association with The Spinoff Award.
