ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Scown, Jenny (1961 - ) is a photographer and writer of books for children. Her photographs have appeared in numerous magazines and publications including Geographica: the complete illustrated reference to New Zealand (1999).
Scowns first book, Filling the Frame (1992) is a collaboration with writer Wendy Nissen. It profiles - in text and photographs - eighteen interesting New Zealand women, from politician Jenny Shipley to olympic boardsailer Barbara Kendall. The dramatic black-and-white photographs show the women in their own environment and often reveal surprising new sides of their personalities. My Seas is the Pacific - Aya's Story (1996) won the non-fiction category of the 1996 Aim Childrens Book Awards. Based on a real Samantha, it tells the story of a young Maori girl and her connection with the sea she lives beside. Along with My Seas is the Pacific - Samanthas Story (1995) it was shortlisted in the LIANZA book awards. Other titles for children are the series of eight books for pre-schoolers, Country Kids (1996) and an account of ballooning, Hot Air (1999).
WRITERS IN SCHOOLS INFORMATION
Jenny Scown is available to talk to students of any age. Topics she is prepared to discuss are photography, photojournalism, her personal vision and writer style. She would prefer to talk to small groups of less than 30 and she is able to run workshops on basic photography techniques and equipment, and digital photography; by prior arrangement. She is prepared to travel out of town for Writers in Schools visits.
