ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ward, Alan (1935-2014) was an historian, writer and Emeritus Professor of the University of Newcastle who continued to work part time for the Waitangi Tribunal. He was involved with the Tribunal's work from the late 1980s.
Born and raised in the Gisborne region, Alan Ward wrote his Masters thesis on the East Coast Maori Trust. In the course of that study he became interested in the nature of Maori customary land tenure. This led to involvement with questions of land tenure in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
A Show of Justice: racial "amalgamation" in nineteenth century New Zealand (1974), Ward's PhD thesis, has been reprinted several times and is standard reading in many university courses.
An Unsettled History; Treaty claims in New Zealand today (1999) argues that the Treaty of Waitangi claims process has, in general, begun well, and that it should continue to be steadily pursued.
Ward was appointed an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.
