An inspiring and relevant story about inequality, Hannah Anderson
Born into a life of slavery. Chosen to be in a position no other Quelled has experienced. Faced with the choices of being a leader. Elsha fights for her people and their freedom.
Winter of Fire is an incredible story written by Sherryl Jordan. It has many relatable moments while still being an excellent story to read and has a really strong message that is relevant to today’s society.
Elsha is one of the Quelled. She is a slave for the Chosen. She has been branded and sent to work in the mines, searching and digging for firestones, to keep everyone warm in their eternal winter. However, she has a rebellious personality, and when she gets chosen as the Firelord’s Handmaid, she keeps fighting for the Quelled.
The story was really easy to relate to and the experiences of the Quelled reflect much of humanity’s past and present: slavery, racism, and the fight for equality. The Quelled are born into slavery, and the Chosen ignore them for it. Elsha fights for those she left behind and those in her future.
Towards the end, when Elsha realises she has the power to make a change for her people, there is a quote that sums up the whole message of the story, which is that anyone can make a difference, however big or small.
‘And so the lives of the Quelled were changed, and for the first time in their history, my people had a voice, dignity, and a limited amount of freedom.’
This quote from the book really shows how, in the end, all the things Elsha did throughout the story helped her to make the lives of the Quelled better. How her actions helped change the futures for those around us.
This is a really strong message as it shows that anyone, no matter how much or how little power you hold, can do something to change the lives of others, even those they do not even know.
By the end of the story, Elsha has become an important figure in her world, but she doesn’t let that change her views and beliefs on what changes must be made for the good of the Quelled. Throughout the book, she deals with the judgements of those seen above her and shows us how others’ opinions of us don’t matter. The only thing we need is to stay strong in what we believe in.
Overall, I loved Winter of Fire, as it was really interesting and inspiring to see how the characters deal with the problems they faced and the inequality in their lives.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in adventure or fiction. It is an inspiring story disguised as a fictional adventure.
