Opening sentence
On her way home from school Ruby found something washed up on the sand.
As Ruby made her way home from school, she came upon something washed up on the sand. It was big and bold and very unusual, but Ruby had found a friend. She took it home and hid it in the cubby house. Cubbies are not ideal places for creatures from the sea and while Ruby tries to accommodate its needs, she finds another friend.
This is a story has hidden depths, it shows friendship and compassion, it delves into acceptance and resourcefulness. It also deals with doing the right thing even if it is hard.
The illustrations are magical. The colour and detail of the creatures and under the sea are mystical while there is a stark contrast to the human world which though still amazing in its detail, has plainer tones and more defined lines.
