Opening sentence
Joey and Sophie stood and looked through the mist to the shadowy land in front of them before turning to look at each other.
The mysterious land of the Elements and the human world collide when desperate Queen Gold pleas for help, and twins Sophie and Joey are put forward on a mission. Can they stop Hydro the leader of the Hydrogens - the villain who loves to blow things up and is determined to invade the human world by building a hydrogen army?
The story moves along quickly, with loads of action and suspense. The language is rich and will stretch the word knowledge of emerging readers. Scientific elements/knowledge is woven through the story and there is a 'fun facts' section at the end, with short, bite sized facts on hydrogen, gold and iron elements, perfect for those who are keen to know more about the elements they have been reading about.
There are some cool illustrations that break up the story, including a map at the beginning, and who isn't a fan of maps at the front of books?! Formatted with large text and additionally some sentences in bold text, makes Hydrogen Showdown perfect for emerging readers, as each page isn't too densely packed with text.
The first few chapters of the next book in the series 'Copper Calamities' is at the end of the book, perfect for those who are keen to read about the next adventures of Sophie and Joey and the world of Elemental Land.
