Opening sentence
I will not fail you. I will live in the world. I will do the work and I will make friends. This I promise.
I hold Fleur Beale in high regard as an author, however, for me, 'Once Upon a Wickedness' falls short of the quality seen in her previous works.

The story exhibits a promising gothic vibe and Dance Violet is an intriguing, orphaned heroine, however, she is overshadowed by an uninspiring plot. The ease with which every obstacle is overcome without substantial explanation felt like a narrative shortcut, lacking Beale's usual compelling reading, and the overly optimistic resolution was a little formulaic and akin to the they-all-lived-happily-ever-after ending.

This story may appeal to younger children, around 6 years old (great large-sized font), however the vocabulary leans towards an older age group (8+), creating an awkward middle ground in writing style.

This story is a mixed bag that might resonate with some children but left me underwhelmed.
