Opening sentence
Ruby was a very, very small mouse, but she was also very, very loud.
This book is a celebration of those of us who have difficulty being quiet and behaving acceptably in public situations. Although Ruby is constantly in trouble for everything from humming to hollering, when she sings very loudly and scares the threatening ruru away everyone is pleased with her. Finally, she is allowed to be her loud self.

Ruby is an appealing character, and the illustrations clearly portray the emotional rollercoaster of her life. Her life at home and at school is beautifully drawn, providing plenty of interesting details which enhance the narrative. There are some funny moments too - “Sometimes Ruby even had to hold her breath, or stuff a large piece of hokey pokey in her mouth to make sure she didn’t squeak.”

This would work well to read aloud, I think many children would love this book.
