Opening sentence
Hex-A-Gone. The name didn’t quite inspire visions of magical greatness.
'Spell Bound' is a young adult fantasy novel with a dash of realism and a romance. The world building in the story is intriguing; magic has been commericalised, but restricted only to those who are perceived to have some sort of magical ability. Fans of traditional fantasy might struggle with the tone – which is quite abrupt and modernised. Fans of romance will enjoy the slow burn enemies-to-friends trope and romance between the two teen characters.
The story is easy to read, with an enjoyable pace and lively characters.
The most prominent theme covered in this book is identity and belonging – with the inclusion of non-binary characters and a non-magic character trying to find their place inside the magic world. There are also strong moments of rebellion, challenging the status quo and protecting those you care about. Some great moral lessons for teen readers who are thinking about their place in the world.
