Opening sentence
"Don't put your waewae in the water," sang Tama's big sisters, "or the taniwha might get you!"
'Tama and the Taniwha' is a well deserved winner of the Joy Cowley Award.
Amazing, vibrant illustrations bring the story to life - entwining commonly used Te Reo Māori words with a fun, rhythmic story. Based on a taunting tale told to a younger brother by his older sisters about a taniwha swimming in the lake, Tama is hesitant to hop in. When he does eventually work up the courage, he realises that the water is lovely - until his sisters start screaming about being attacked by the taniwha. Tama decides to go searching for the elusive creature and eventually finds her - enjoying a long swim alongside her.
A great read, especially for younger students and those students with older siblings who like to taunt them!
