Opening sentence
To all the kids cheering for your idols on TV, this book is for you.
Across 64 colourful and beautifully illustrated pages, Chloe Dalton introduces us to 26 female and non-binary athletes from Australian sporting history.

Each athlete represents a different sport, meaning readers can learn about a wide range of sports as well as lesser-known Aussie athletes. Each double page spread includes an illustration of the athlete and one or two sentences about them and their achievements. When we’re so used to seeing female athletes spoken about in terms of their appearance and personal lives, it was refreshing to see a book that focuses purely on their sporting careers and achievements.

This is a great resource for young readers, especially primary and intermediate aged children who may not be confident or committed readers. The visually engaging pages, dynamic illustrations and short text makes this an accessible book that readers can dip in and out of. The vocabulary is slightly challenging in places, but I enjoyed how the tone speaks to readers with the jargon of the sporting world. Just be warned you may be asked to explain what ‘accolades’ means.

This is a fun and accessible book that brings visibility to women in sport and provides inspiration for young athletes across the sporting spectrum.
