Macpherson, Mary (-) is a poet, a photographer and a communications professional.

Mary Macpherson is a well-known photographer and poet. Her photographic work has been widely exhibited. Her poetry has been published in a collection of her own work, in literary journals such as Sport and Landfall, and as part of the collaborative work Millionaire’s Shortbread (2003). She has had writing published in Etchings, Snorkel and Turbine.

In a review of Macpherson’s first collection of poetry The Inland Eye (1998) Paola Bilbrough writes that her poems, 'say a lot – beautifully and with seemingly little effort – and many of the poems have a disturbing enigmatic quality’. Jenny Argante comments in the New Zealand Poetry Society newsletter, 'Mary Macpherson handles well the subconscious perplexity of modern society as experienced by the individuals who wander through it ... Macpherson makes us understand that we are all visitors, that we cannot fully understand ourselves and that it doesn't matter.' Macpherson herself writes, 'I am interested in writing poems that explore the intangible aspects of human experience, through the sense of an individual in contemporary society.' Mary Macpherson was born in Dunedin and now lives in Wellington.

Macpherson had a poem included in Shards of Silver (Steele Roberts, 2006), a book investigating the interplay between photography and poetry.

In 2006, Mary Macpherson completed an MA in Creative Writing at Victoria University.

Mary’s book of photographs, Old New World, was published in 2012 by Lopdell House Gallery, Auckland, in conjunction with her touring exhibition. An excerpt from Old New World was featured in Booknotes Issue 176.
