Opening sentence
My family tree is tall and round, with feet called roots that grow under the ground.
I absolutely loved My Family Tree, My Whānau and Me, and so did my students! Like the other books in the series, it feels like a song woven into a picture book. The lyrics have a poetic quality, giving the book a rhythmic feel, while still offering windows into various family stories through both the text and the illustrations. Even without a clear narrative, the story still resonates, capturing snippets of family life in a way that children can easily connect with.

The illustrations, as always, are stunning. Minky’s artwork beautifully complements the uplifting, easy-to-read lyrics, infusing every page with color and warmth. The book embraces the diversity of Aotearoa, showing families from all walks of life. I especially loved how the book includes both English and Māori versions of the song, written by Kawiti Waetford, making it accessible to a wider audience and promoting the beauty of bilingualism.

This book is a celebration of family, culture, and connection, and it really transports you back to those joyful moments spent with loved ones. While the theme of trees might be literal, the deeper meaning resonates—it's about remembering where you come from and the people who shape you. It’s a sweet, vibrant reminder of the importance of family and place, and one I’ll gladly share with my students again and again.
