I sure am lucky to have a nice warm, dry pen, she thought, as fat drops of rain began to fall.
Who could resist the delightfully happy pig on the cover of this book. It is based on the story of a pig that swam to safety during cyclone Gabrielle. This pig was very happy in his home on the farm until the dreadful night the storm blew in. He first found safety high on a ledge but then the water rose…

The Lucky Little Pig is a charming story that came from a devastating event. The text is well written and the illustrations complement the text perfectly. The facial expressions of the pig are especially engaging. The illustrator has portrayed movement in the swimming and the mud splashing that is enchanting.

I love that the author, Stacey Smith, has written a positive story and focused only on the main character, Lucky the Pig. Stacey has included some information about Cyclone Gabrielle but the emphasis is directed towards helping parents help their children to deal with trauma. I highly recommend this book and see a great deal of value in sharing it with classes everywhere. At the end of the story is a photograph of the actual pig who was found after the cyclone in Stacey’s house which is the perfect ending to this thankfully happy tale.
