Opening sentence
(The singing stone) “looked like a hot coal from a bonfire. It seemed like it should be hot to touch, but it wasn’t at all.”
In The Singing Stone, Gary Venn delivers an inspirational story of adventure and self-discovery.

Set on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula, the story follows 14-year-old Miles' adventure after discovering a mysterious red stone in the wilderness. This stone begins displaying magical properties, signing out into the wild and creating strange, patterned markings on the boy. The beautiful depictions of the Coromandel scenery and Aotearoa’s rugged bushlands add an immersive element to the storytelling.

The Singing Stone’s face-paced and easy-to-read narrative makes for an enjoyable story that would appeal to a younger audience (those under 13). The beautifully crafted illustrations allow readers to delve deeper into the world of The Singing Stone. The accompanying illustrations and short chapters would make it an easy novel to read aloud.

The simplicity of the narrative and age-appropriate dialogue can become repetitive to an advanced reader. These readers may find it difficult to remain engaged in the story due to this reason.

In particular, this book will appeal to readers intrigued by the supernatural, mysterious, and suspenseful phenomena in our world. Readers particularly intrigued by supernatural or science fiction genres will be best suited to this novel.
