Opening sentence
Beneath the peach tree Kunekune was dreaming about flying.
Kunekune and Hare are perplexed. Every night the food is going missing. They embark on a journey to try and find out what is happening to the kai. Along the way, they meet a variety of animals and ask for help.

The illustrations in this book are stunning. The animals are so detailed they are almost life-like and we liked the way the illustrator has included a cross-section drawing so we can see the worm tunnels, rocks and things below the ground.

The storyline is a little unusual and when I first read it to my class of Year 6 students they were also a little confused about what it was about. However, after reading it a couple more times I could see how it developed into a tale of sharing and teamwork.

This book would probably appeal to a younger audience who would enjoy looking at the illustrations. It would be a good book to promote oral language and discussion around the value of asking questions when you don’t understand something or the answer is not immediately obvious.
