If the neighbours had known there was an elephant on their street, there'd have been children hanging out of every window
A fantastically written story about the move of Taronga Zoo from one side of Sydney to the other before the Sydney Harbour Bridge had been constructed. Focused mainly around the elephant, Jessie, this story includes beautiful illustrations which could easily inspire some sketching-based artwork in classes.

Jessie is walked across Sydney in the early hours of the morning, much to the surprise of the milkman and an early riser. There is much potential to use this story as the basis for many learning opportunities. In creative writing, students could write about the perspective of the milkman, or Jessie's thoughts as she walks across the city and boards a barge to the other side of harbour. This could also inspire a history-based project to do with moving an entire zoo from one location to another and also a study into the conservation efforts that many zoos are a part of.

Recommended for younger students (5-10).
