Opening sentence
“Mā te toa ka aha?” tā Grandma. “Kei te taiao ngā kai!”
Ko Ngā Whetū Kai o Matariki: Ko Tupuānuku rāua ko Tupuārangi te pukapuka tuatoru nā Miriama Kamo i tito e pā ana ki a Te Rerehua rāua ko Sam me te whānau i Te Mata Hāpuku. Ko tēnei tāna pukapuka tuawhā e pā ana ki Matariki. Kua haoa, kua pāwharatia ngā tuna mō te hākari Matariki, heoi, hei te pō ka kai ngā patupaiarehe i ngā tuna. He pakiwaitara tēnei e pā ana ki ngā mahinga kai me ngā hua o te taiao. Ha pakiwaitara hei whakanui i a Matariki.

Nā Zak Waipara ngā pikitia. E rite tonu ana ngā momo pikitia whakaari ki ngā pukapuka “Ngā Whetū Matariki kua whānakotia” me “Ko ngā Whetū Takirua o Matariki”. He rārangi kupu kei muri i te pukapuka hei āwhina i te kaipānui. Nā Ariana Stevens i takoha te whakamāoritanga o tēnei pakiwaitara.

He pukapuka pai tēnei mā ngā tamariki i te Kōhanga Reo, i te Kura Kaupapa Māori hoki. He pai hoki mā ngā whānau reo Māori. Kei te harikoa ahau ki te kite i te taiao o Wairewa, o Te Wai Pounamu me te mahi hao tuna. Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei.

Ko Ngā Whetū Kai o Matariki: Ko Tupuānuku rāua ko Tupuārangi is the third book about Te Rerehua and Sam and the whānau of Te Mata Hāpuku / Birdlings Flat. This is her fourth book about Matariki. The tuna have been caught and prepared for the Matariki feast but during the night patupaiarehe eat the prepared tuna. This story is about traditional Ngai Tahu food-gathering practices and the fruits of the environment. It is also a story about celebrating Matariki.

Zak Waipara has illustrated this book. The illustrations are similar in style to the earlier books “Ngā Whetū Matariki kua whānakotia” me “Ko ngā Whetū Takirua o Matariki”. There is a glossary at the rear of the book. Ngāi Tahu translator Ariana Stevens has gifted the translation of this book.

This is a good book for tamariki at Kōhanga Reo or at Kura Kaupapa Māori. It will also be enjoyed by reo speaking whānau. I am happy to see the environment of Wairewa and Te Wai Pounamu and the practice of catching tuna in this book. Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei.
