Opening sentence
Without the moon in the sky, the oceans will stop moving and the earth will start to wobble.
I was immediately captivated by the endearing cover and intricate details in the illustrations. I instantly knew that this was going to be a magical story and it did indeed contain several elements of a nostalgic folktale or fairytale – a forest and mountain setting, creatures helping humans, a problem that is resolved in a fantastical way and everything being perfect at the conclusion of the story.
The glowing illustrations are absolutely adorable and will hold the interest of the audience, even on the occasional pages where there are possibly more words than would be expected in a picture book.
Although the author lives in New Zealand this is not evident in the book as the illustrations show stunning foxes, bears, squirrels, racoons and badgers which are not found here. This adds to the magical feeling.
It is quite rare to find a book this calm and tender, yet thought-provoking at the same time. It would be equally suited to be read to a class of students as it would at bedtime. I imagine it will be snapped up the moment it goes into the library.
