Opening sentence
Violet Cloughley slung her school bag over her shoulder, pulled her hat firmly on her head, and hurried off to school with her older sister Myrtle.
Violet's Scarf is a story set in 1915, when her brother George is fighting in World War I, in France. One school day, a lady from the Red Cross visits her school and talks about sending items to the soldiers. Violet decides to knit a scarf to send away. The finished items are wrapped up and sent to Wellington, then onto the soldiers overseas. Amazingly, Violet’s scarf ends up with her brother in France. George wears the scarf and keeps it safe until he returns home.
This story is a great wartime story, and the fact that it is true is wonderful. At the back of the book, there is more information that supports the story; if readers are wanting to learn more. The illustrations also nicely reflect the drawings of the time this story was set in. This book would make a great read-aloud to classes in the lead-up to ANZAC day, or any unit studying war. There are so many activities that could be based on this story.
