Opening sentence
"This book is two hundred and ninety-three days overdue," the librarian told Grandad and me.
But Then... is a fabulous tale of a book (290 days overdue) taking its time to get back to the library and the very understanding librarian. A myriad of animals on land, sky and sea have a chance to read the book before it passes onto the next, creating the set up for the great line, "but then....". Eventually (spoiler alert) it makes its way back to Grandad, the original borrower, and the library.

The illustrations show action and movement, we can almost feel the whoosh of the water as the whale leaps, or the breeze that carries the book as it falls from the grasp of the albatross. They are bright and eye catching, giving the reader a number of perspectives and little details to draw the eye in.

If you are wondering if this would be a fabulous read aloud, I can highly recommend it. It was chosen as the Story Walk book for Aotearoa School Library Week and as I read it aloud to many students on the walk they all wished for me to read it again once we got to the end!

But Then is fun, adventurous and oh to be the book going on such an adventure!
