Ko Whetū Toa me te Tangata Tūmatarau describes the adventures of Whetū Toa. Whetū’s mother has just taken on a job working for the magician (te Tangata Tūmatarau). Whetū becomes the animal keeper, looking after the magician’s menagerie of interesting animals.

When the magician’s assistant, the mischievous Errant the rabbit, disappears, it is left to Whetū to save the day.

Each chapter is supported with an illustration by Katharine Hall and a glossary of new vocabulary. The pictures and glossary are a good aid for readers to check their understanding of the book.

This book is one of a growing number of junior readers available for readers to purchase in both English and te reo Māori. Having both languages available is of great help to second language learners and parents learning alongside their tamariki. This short chapter novel would make a great class study and this book will be appreciated by tamariki in Kura Kaupapa Māori and Reo Rumaki classrooms.
