Opening sentence
Do not cry for earth who birthed you, for river as she calls your name...
Do not expect this to be a picture book that you can read sight unseen to a class of students and expect them to understand the contents. They, and possibly you, may be left a little bewildered and wondering what it was all about when you get to the end. The strong image on the front cover may give an indication that the story inside is going to be a gritty one. The dedication by the author, and the blurb on the cover, give insight into the basis of the story - aboriginal children being taken from their families and country.  With this in mind, comes a better understanding of the narrative.

The book is not overly wordy and has unique artwork created with acrylic paint on wood panel.

The publisher has produced useful teaching notes which can be found on the Scholastic website. This book could be a great starting point for teaching about the history of the Aboriginal children of Stolen Generations.
