Opening sentence
Sal wants to be a real cowgirl, with boots and a hat just like Dad's.
Interestingly this book is written through the eyes of Sal's pony. This allows children to see that the way we feel about ourselves is very different from the way others see us. Sal was brave and strong when she was with her pony but at school, she was shy until she shared her passion with her class and discovered a friend who shared her passion.

This would work well as a read-aloud.
