Opening sentence
Moo! Says cow.
This is such a great story on many levels. Wonderful sound patterns—onomatopoiea and rhyme give it a sing-song quality and it has a great sense of the ridiculous about it with a duck that refuses to quack. Children of all ages will love hearing it read to them and will in turn love reading it aloud themselves.
The actual story is almost unbelievable, but is based on an actual true event, with a duckling that hatched near a cat and imprinted onto it. The story builds to a very satisfying ending with the duck and two kittens snuggling up to the mother cat. The bold and simple illustrations in primary colours will also appeal to young children.
