Opening sentence
Cat wants in!
For anyone who has had a resident cat, this story is all too familiar. Cats are capricious creatures and expect their human servants to leap up on demand to let them in and out of the house. In this story, the very patient dog takes the human role, though even he gets mad.
This is a book of few words, with the colourful and expressive illustrations essential to understanding the nuances of the story. Great conversations with children could be had by asking questions about how the animals are feeling. The repetition of words and simple sentence structures, e.g. “Dog is mad! Cat is sad!” would make this a good choice for beginner readers.
