Opening sentence
Mim lives in the shallow, sandy waters where the roaring ocean meets the peaceful river
This is a beautiful picture book about the Mimic Octopus and how it is able to mimic other sea creatures in order to protect itself or to catch its prey.
The text is very simple, with only one descriptive sentence on each double page, but Severgnini makes great use of language e.g., “She’s a banded sea snake, side-winding among the twisted, tangled tree roots.” But the double paged illustrations are the main focus of the book. These are very detailed and skilled but do not overcrowd the pages, and together with the subtle use of colour create a very relaxing reading experience.
At the back of the book, Severgnini draws the sea creatures mimicked throughout the book, so that the reader can see the differences as well as the similarities between Mim and the real thing. This is followed by a page of, “5 Fabulous Facts About the Mimic Octopus”.
This is an absolutely beautiful book which I have loved reviewing. It would be good as a read-aloud book as well as for reading one-on-one, and I highly recommend it to all ages. I intend buying a copy for myself!
