I guess princesses can be good at football.
Princess Mitchell is a sweet and simple story about a young boy who loves princesses, dancing, fantasy books and football.

Mitchell fills his life with the things he likes: tutu’s, tap shoes, art and flowers. He also loves playing football with his friend Beck. The conflict of the story occurs when Mitchell is bullied and teased by a team mate who takes offence at the way Mitchell breaks gender stereotypes. Mitchell doesn’t let his team mate’s outburst upset him and goes on to have a great game of football and a celebration with his friends. The team mate’s processing and learning happens off page but they eventually reconcile and apologise.

This would be a great story book for leading discussions around gender and sports, gendered clothing, friendship, interests, misogyny and reconciliation. The illustrations could have been a bit more detailed and nuanced, because of the simple illustrative style it would be easy to mistake this as a book for just pre schoolers but this could be enjoyed by kids up to 10.

This would make a great addition to a classroom and an interesting read aloud.
