You may not have thought much about it, but did you know some families change?
Changing dynamics in the home can create uncertainty, joy, disruption and excitement for children. This book helps readers understand the emotions and questions they might be experiencing due to family changes. Parent break-ups, blended families, single-parent households, moving houses, families with two mums or dads are all addressed in this book. Different family types are celebrated, helping to foster acceptance and diversity.

Some Families Change reassures young children they are loved, supported and not alone. Various changes, beginnings and endings are explored in a simple and positive manner. The hardback cover, large font and bold illustrations will be enjoyed by readers aged 4-8 years old. The length is perfect for a warm fuzzy bedtime read. Every page includes short, punchy text whilst the accompanying soft, colourful visuals depict a wide range of people and families.

The author, Jessica Galatola, is a teacher and mother. She drew inspiration for the book when her own family circumstances changed. Some Families Change was written with her two young boys in mind, helping them to make sense of their changing surroundings.

Although this is a lovely read for any child, those experiencing family changes will benefit the most. The comforting tone will support the adult reader to hold supportive conversations too. This book would work well as a read-aloud.
